III. Bài mẫu:

Well I want to talk about my good buddy Hung, he is actually born and raised in Mexico and he has a very interesting backstory because he lived in many different countries. If my memory serves me right, I met him when I was working at the university helping people from other countries adapt to university life in Canada. He is jovially approachable and overall just a really nice guy so we bonded right away. We became really good friends a few years back and one of the cool things about Hung is that he is bilingual actually I think he is trilingual but he can speak at least English very well and Spanish which is his native language. Recently, I’ve taken up a really big interest in Spanish because I love learning languages and I love challenging myself by trying to learn new things all the time. The interesting thing is that Hung is quite interested in Vietnamese which is my mother tongue. So I think it would be really awesome if the two of us become language buddies or language partners. He teaches me Spanish, I teach him VNese. We can have a good time, grab a coffee, grab a bite to eat together and learn something every day. He is fun to be around and he is overall like a really positive influence on me so if I have to study with someone it would be Hung and i’d studying Spanish.

IV. Từ vựng tham khảo:

  • jovially (adv): làm gì đó 1 cách vui vẻ
  • bonded right away: gắn bó ngay lập tức
  • trilingual (n): người nói 3 thứ tiếng

V. PART 3 QUESTIONS

1. What kinds of co-workers do people like to work with?

I guess it depends on each person’s preferences. Personally, I do not want to work with people who have a lot of knowledge or experience but refuse to share it. Rather, I would love to work with a co-operative partner who is willing to work as a team and is not afraid of receiving constructive criticism.

  • knowledgeable: giỏi, nhiều kiến thức
  • hands-on experience: kinh nghiệm thực tế
  • sẵn sàng chia sẻ, hợp tác (co-operative)

2. Which one is more important to you at work, development in work-related skills or recognition from your supervisors?

Although acquiring different work-related skills will help you improve career prospects, I believe recognition from your boss is always more important. It directly affects your job satisfaction, which has a positive relationship with work efficiency. Also, since appreciative leaders are appreciated leaders, employees of such leaders will be more willing to stick around and commit to the company.

  • Development in work-related skills: tăng hiệu quả làm việc, phát triển bản thân hơn, tăng cơ hội tìm việc (nếu có chuyển chỗ làm).
  • Recognition from your supervisors: tăng sự hài lòng trong công việc (work satisfaction), tăng sự tận tâm và trung thành.

3. Do you think managers should be friends with their subordinates?

Yes and no. A boss should care and sympathize with each employee to make them feel taken care of on a personal level, which could become a great motivation and improve morale. However, they should also know how to draw a line between themselves and their subordinates, not only to stay professional but also to avoid bias treatment.

  • Constructive criticism: lời phê bình mang tính xây dựng
  • Improve career prospects: tăng cơ hội tìm kiếm việc làm
  • Job satisfaction: sự hài lòng về công việc
  • Improve morale: cải thiện tinh thần (làm việc)
  • Draw a line: phân biệt
  • Bias treatment: đối xử thiên vị
